Last week Rinpoche ran 90 miles in the country side of Vermont. This was his last week of full-time running. Between now and the race he will run less distance as he prepares his body to be in peak condition. Although he is running less distance Rinpoche has been doing speed work, so he can up his pace. He has proved that he can run the distance with his 90 mile week and his recent 50 Kilometer ultra marathon in the Rocky Mountains. Now he will see how much faster he can run. However Rinpoche’s main priority is to finish the race along with his team.

MARATHON TRAINING WITH SAKYONG MIPHAM
With two weeks to go until the New York Marathon, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche has arrived in Boulder, Colorado, preparing for the launch of the “Ruling Your World” booktour. In addition to a busy teaching schedule in Boulder, Rinpoche continues to focus on preparations for the New York Marathon, carefully planning his workouts to ensure maximum performance on race day. In the previous four weeks, the Sakyong has logged an incredible 330 miles of running, mostly on the backroads of Vermont during his recent teaching visit to Karme Choling. Now in Boulder, Rinpoche will reduce his training volume, focusing on recovering from the heavy mileage of the previous months. This recovery period, or “tapering”, is crucial to preparing for the task of running 26.2 miles across the paved streets of New York City. Planned carefully, and supplemented with bodywork for injury prevention, the taper period will leave Rinpoche’s body feeling refreshed and ready for top performance on November 6th.
The summer of 2005 was productive in many ways for Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and the Sakyong’s training program for the New York Marathon was no exception. Through the summer, Rinpoche averaged 40-80 miles of running per week, mostly at altitudes over 8,000 ft above sea level. Maintaining such volume requires great dedication as well as fitness. In addition to presiding over Seminary, bestowing the Rigden Abhisheka, and welcoming the Ripa family to Shambhala, the Sakyong managed to never miss a workout! Also included in Rinpoche’s training regime are at least three weekly weight lifting workouts, which are crucial to maintaining a balanced and strong body, as well as for the prevention of injury.
Following the summer, the Sakyong traveled to the East Coast, where he continued to build his weekly training volume, culminating in a 92 mile week in mid-September. To achieve such a volume, the Sakyong was required to complete two 20 mile runs within a six day period. Several of these important runs were accomplished in difficult weather conditions, including cold rain and whipping winds. One such three-hour effort was immediately followed by a three-hour puja in the Karme Choling shrineroom. The Sakyong has remained resolved to complete the rigorous training necessary to prepare for the marathon in New York, where similar conditions could be faced.
In addition to long distance training runs, the Sakyong has also included grueling “interval training” for the development of his running speed. These workouts involve alternating mile-long sections of road or trail, covered at a blistering pace of five minutes per mile. These workouts are carefully planned, and the effort level continually monitored to maximize the training effect of the workout. Successful interval training will result in reduced marathon times, and Rinpoche will continue this style of training right up until race day in order to achieve a personal best marathon time.
As in all of his activities, the Sakyong embodies complete discipline and care in his marathon training. Hundreds of hours per year are devoted to Rinpoche’s training plan, and through this unique enlightened activity, the Sakyong remains dedicated to the vision of Shambhala worldwide.
